1830 (possibly 2005)

This was the first 5 player game I’ve played for quite a number of years. John and Lance arrived at 9am and Jarratt arrived ten minutes earlier. This was Lance’s first game, John’s second and Jarratt’s third and we got started straight away. Jarratt had bought along his laptop and a spreadsheet to calculate the income during operating rounds. This was very useful and probably reduced game time by 25%.

I ended up with the SVN&RR and B&O privates and started the B&O with help from others -- mostly Jarratt. John bought the D&H private and started the NYNH&H. Anne had the C&A but found it hard work starting the PRR. Lance bought the M&H private and waited awhile before starting the C&O. Jarratt ended up with the C&SL and played a waiting game investing in various other rail roads (especially the B&O and NYNH&H). John start the B&M (which is a nice partner to the NYNH&H). Jarratt dumped B&O just before the 4 trains came out and avoided my miscalculation, and once I forced his hand by paring the NYC at $100 he opened both NYC (with help from me and Lance) and the Erie (by himself) at the same time. He roared through the 4 & 5 trains by buying two of each, but left himself train locked. Anne’s PRR and my B&O (once the best performing rail road but now loitering down the bottom of the stock market) were forced to buy the 6 trains.

The game settled down to a race to build the best routes and the top corner of the stock market. Some investors lost confidence in the C&O and its low dividends, but it repaid its more loyal shareholders by reaching $350 per share ahead of the NYC which ran with two trains but no routes for quite awhile and the Erie which managed to payout more frequently. John out of boredom or fear upset his shareholders by withholding dividends in the very profitable NYNH&H and then buying a diesel to leave the B&M with no trains and only $10 and then dumping it on Anne. Anne could have dumped it on me but didn’t and then bought it a diesel out of her own cash to make two very profitable runs before the bank ran out of money.

Jarratt $7196
Lance $7162
John $6065
Ian $5198
Anne $4696

Editor's note: I found this session report in an undated file. I'm note sure when this game was played, I'm guessing 2005)
